Gastric Band / Lap Band

The gastric band (commonly called the Lap Band) is an adjustable, reversible weight loss procedure. The surgeon places a soft silicone band around the upper part of the stomach - think of it like an adjustable belt - which creates a small pouch above it that fills quickly, so you feel full sooner and slow down while eating. Nothing is removed, stapled, or rerouted, and the band can be tightened, loosened, or removed later.

Because it works by limiting how fast and how much you eat - rather than by changing your hunger hormones - the band depends a lot on conscious eating habits. It is chosen less often today, and some patients later revise to a gastric sleeve.
